A new "Choosing Wisely" campaign by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation has identified 100 procedures that should be avoided by the elderly. The list was culled from common treatments like surgeries and therapies commonly (and mistakenly) administered to seniors and elders. This includes:
1. Feeding tubes for people with dementia
2. Psychiatric medication for dementia and Alzheimer
3. Prescribing antibiotics for patients with no discomfort for UTI
4. Sleeping pills rather than gentler therapies for insomnia
There are alternatives to all items on this list. For example, it is suggested that patients with Alzheimer be fed by hand rather than a feeding tube, which exacerbates bed sores and irritates the throat. A-1 Home Care can arrange for a dedicated 24 Hour Senior Caregiver to stay with mom or dad during the day. We provide caregiving services in in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, North Hollywood,

Monica, La Canada, Flintridge, Glendale, San Fernando or elsewhere in Los Angeles County.
